Communiqué issued at the end of the Ordinary General Meeting (OGM) of Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on Friday 27th August 2021.

Preamble

The OGM of Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (NSP) was held on Friday, 27th August 2021. The meeting was a hybrid one with participants across thirty-six states of the federation and the FCT. The in-venue attendance held at Breakfort Hotel and Suites, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Resolutions

1) NSP state chapters are enjoined to conduct elections as at when due in accordance with the provisions of the amended 2019 constitution, that provides for three (3) years single tenure for elected office holders. State chapters which had their elections prior to the adoption of the amended constitution, will run a two (2) year single tenure in the first instance, thereafter should switch to a three (3) year single tenure. Members are also encouraged to offer to serve the association at the state level especially in the states where tenures of serving officers have expired.

2) NSP state chapters are required to submit periodical reports of their activities to the secretariat using the report template to be provided by the Quality Assurance Office of NSP.

3) World Physiotherapy – West African Sub-region member Associations have proposed the establishment of a West African Postgraduate Physiotherapy College (WAPPC). In Nigeria, the College will run concurrently with already established Postgraduate Physiotherapy College (PPC). The OGM resolved that NSP and PPC should provide necessary support to ensure the realization of the College.

4) A welfare package will be instituted for financial members going forward, to cover for death of member and end of year appreciation gifts for members in good standing in the first instance. It was resolved that five (5) percent of annual dues of every member be set aside strictly for this purpose.

5) The OGM approved the constitution of new Board of Trustees as well as the Working Committee of the Nwuga Physiotherapy Foundation following the expiration of the tenure of the previous Board and Working Committee. Dr Olufunke Ajiboye and Dr Michael Egwu are the chairpersons of the Boardand the Working Committee respectively.

6) The OGM resolved that the NSP Physiotherapy Institute be abolished, while all its function be carried out by the Education Committee. This has become necessary because the Institute duplicates the functions of the NSP Education Committee and that we are currently not positioned to run dual post graduate colleges at once.

7) The OGM reinstates that the employment of Physiotherapists should be based on area of specialization and full compliment of all the physiotherapy cadres. The Heads of Physiotherapy Departments (CHOPDIN) are obligated to ensure the implementation of this resolution at their various institutions.

8) NSP will continue to collaborate with MRTBN in the fight against quackery. To this end, state chapters are enjoined to promptly report any act of quackery to MRTBN for further necessary actions.

The NEC commended the Akwa Ibom State NSP for successfully hosting the NSP OGM and Combined training sessions. Likewise, the hosting State (Jigawa) for the Annual Scientific Conference and AGM was encouraged to speed up arrangement towards the success of the conference.
